Fire

How to prevent a house fire:

• Do not smoke in bed.
• Do not leave kitchen utensils, etc. on the stove or furnace.
• Keep flammable or fire-stimulating material away from stoves and furnaces.
• With a field technician, periodically check the heating system if you have it in the apartment, the gas for cooking and the electrical system of the kitchen.
• Keep matches and lighters away from children.
• Do not keep flammable liquids near heat sources.

What to do in case of fire in the apartment:

• If a kitchen utensil catches fire, to put it out, just put a lid on it to suffocate the flames.
• If your clothes are on fire do not start running (air adds to the flames). You should try to remove your clothes or put out the flames by rolling on the ground or wrapping yourself in a blanket.
• If an electrical appliance catches fire, turn off the main power switch before attempting to extinguish it. CAREFUL! Do not use water to extinguish an electrical fire as you may be electrocuted.
• Do not use water when the fire is caused by oil or gasoline, as these liquids stay on top of the water and in this way there is a possibility that the fire will spread to other premises.

How to prevent a forest fire:

• Do not under any circumstances throw cigarette butts in areas where there is grass as there is a possibility of starting a fire.
• Do not start fires in forests. If you start a campfire, do not leave without making sure it is completely extinguished.
• If you park your vehicle, make sure your car marmite is not in contact with dry grass as hot marmite can catch fire.
• Do not burn tree branches or leaves without taking the necessary measures as the fire can spread in a few minutes.

What to do during a forest fire:

• If you see a fire or just smoke, immediately call the fire service to give the alarm. Don’t think other people have done it before you. Give the exact location of the fire.
• Look for a safe way to leave, a road or the banks of a river.
• Do not stop in places where the wind is blowing towards you, as you may be trapped in the flames.
• Lie on the ground in a place where vegetation is sparse, as smoke tends to rise and thus avoid smoke inhalation.
• If you are surrounded by flames and have no other way, try to find the place where the flames are lower and cross to the other side.
• Fire is not a spectacle. Don’t stand on the road looking at it. You can block or delay the circulation of emergency vehicles.
